Sci-Tech watch, 33: On Leontief's Input-Output, Inter-industry analysis

Wassily Leontief won a Nobel Memorial Prize for Economics in 1974 because of his work to create a matrix-based analytical framework for economic modelling. That work was rooted in early 1920's work in the USSR and developments to the point where Leontief created a computer-based model of the US Economy at the turn of the 1950's.

As just one illustration of the utility of such a model -- despite the limitations of its implied linearisation of an inherently nonlinear system, my late Father used an early 23 sector model of Jamaica's economy in the mid-1960's to project development issues and concerns across 20 years, drawing attention to needed strategic interventions to draw out and initially address an almost Malthusian imbalance between population, investment, education gaps and productive potential of the workforce, unemployment and general social welfare.

The following tutorial in four parts (at YouTube -- not a general endorsement, given the rapid rise of web censorship in recent months . . . ) may be helpful to those needing a basic introduction:

Such models have now been greatly extended and are a basis for modelling as far afield as energy sustainability and the like. END

FFT*: Mark Steyn warns us all, post the Manchester suicide bombing

. . . in the first reflective piece that seems to me to sufficiently probe to the core issues, whether or not you are inclined to go along with his points. (Cf. Grant here and note the comments exchange, including the oh you Christians are [potentially?] much the same talking points.) So, please read and ponder -- and ask yourself, what if he has a point? END

Matt 24 watch, 301: That torched car on Trump's Inauguration day? -- it was rented by Lance Wallnau . . .

Oh, here is an infograf I shared at UD, not realising that telling little matter:

(I went on to highlight the March for life and my view that the 800+ million unborn children slaughtered globally since the 1970's -- and mounting up at a million more per WEEK -- is the mother cancer that is spreading metastases of perversion, corruption, abuse and deception all across our civilisation, here. Thus, this issue . . . the live, in progress worst holocaust in history . . .  is a pivotal focus of our spiritual call to prophetically challenge the nations, calling to repentance, remission of sins and discipleship through the gospel, thus to reformation and God blessed transformation.)

So, too, we now need to ask some pointed spiritual questions.

First, Lance in a periscope shared on Jan 23rd:

Next, let us refresh memories on the seven mountains vision he has championed. Here, as I have adapted it to the fullness of Christ theme and the four R's of reformation:

In discipleship foundations form:

And yet again, in generic, commanding heights of culture business (yes, SIN) as usual vs  the godly, sound alternative form:

From what Lance said, two cars were trashed and torched. That one of these would be his is just too unlikely to be of no spiritual significance. That puts the message he has emphasised at the crux of the matter

For, if the devil's minions are hitting that close to him, there is a reason.

So, too, let us read Acts 19, to see how the demonised mob created chaos to try to attack Paul -- and, notice how the disciples and the Town Clerk responded:
Acts 19:21 Now after these events [the seven sons of Sceva put to flight by a demoniac, etc] Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem, saying, “After I have been there, I must also see Rome.” 22 And having sent into Macedonia two of his helpers, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.

23 About that time there arose no little disturbance concerning the Way. 24 For a man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen. 25 These he gathered together, with the workmen in similar trades, and said,
“Men, you know that from this business we have our wealth. 26 And you see and hear that not only in Ephesus but in almost all of Asia this Paul has persuaded and turned away a great many people, saying that gods made with hands are not gods. 27 And there is danger not only that this trade of ours may come into disrepute but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be counted as nothing, and that she may even be deposed from her magnificence, she whom all Asia and the world worship.”
28 When they heard this they were enraged and were crying out, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” 29 So the city was filled with the confusion, and they rushed together into the theater, dragging with them Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians who were Paul's companions in travel. 30 But when Paul wished to go in among the crowd, the disciples would not let him.
31 And even some of the Asiarchs,[e] who were friends of his, sent to him and were urging him not to venture into the theater. 32 Now some cried out one thing, some another, for the assembly was in confusion, and most of them did not know why they had come together. 33 Some of the crowd prompted Alexander, whom the Jews had put forward. And Alexander, motioning with his hand, wanted to make a defense to the crowd. 34 But when they recognized that he was a Jew, for about two hours they all cried out with one voice, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

35 And when the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, “Men of Ephesus, who is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the sacred stone that fell from the sky?[f] 36 Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash. 37 For you have brought these men here who are neither sacrilegious nor blasphemers of our goddess. 38 If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen with him have a complaint against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another.
39 But if you seek anything further,[g] it shall be settled in the regular assembly. 40 For we really are in danger of being charged with rioting today, since there is no cause that we can give to justify this commotion.”
41 And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly. [ESV]
Mobs, chaos, falsity, accusation [especially materially false accusation], busineses that seek gain from promoting rebellion against God [and demand to be respected as though they were legitimate -- then going out to stir up trouble . . . ], confusion, frenzy, riot are hallmarks of disorder; but our God is the God of sound order and sound authority, truth and right. So, through this contrast the spirits at work are manifest. Where, if you needed more evidence (and pardon language etc) here is Pam Geller's reporter-- yes, I do not endorse her beyond here documenting facts on the ground --  trying to interact with marchers from the Women's march the next day.

Please pardon truly vile language (yet another sign of the animating spirits):

This pattern brings things to a focus, the seven mountains challenge. That is, the fullness of Christ theme as strategic focus for the church in these last days:

Eph 1:16 I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, 18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might 20 that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.

22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills [everything in every way] . . . .

Eph 4: . . . 10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.)

11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds[c] and teachers,[d] 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood,[e] to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.

15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.
17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds.

18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.

20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self,[f] which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. [ESV, 1:23 uses NIV rendering instead of "all in all" also in Eph 4:12 the comma that may be misunderstood is removed.]

Let us ponder even more food for thought. END

Matt 24 watch, 300: Putin of Russia -- yes, the former KGB Colonel and now Orthodox President of Russia! -- warns his nation and our civilisation about the ongoing collapse of Christendom . . .

Food for thought.

Video (in Russian, with English sub-titles):

Vox Day (and I most definitely do not approve of him in general -- hence no link . . . ) has a transcript:
A further challenge for the national Russian identity is connected to the processes we observe outside of Russia. They include foreign policy, moral, and other aspects. We see that many Euro-Atlantic states have taken the way where they deny or reject their own roots, including their Christian roots which form the basis of Western civilization.
In these countries, the moral basis and any traditional identity are being denied - national, religious, cultural, and even gender identities are being denied or relativised. There, politics treats a family with many children as juridically equal to a homosexual partnership; faith in God is equal to faith in Satan.
The excesses and exaggerations of political correctness in these countries indeed leads to serious consideration for the legitimization of parties that promote the propaganda of paedophilia.
The people in many European states are actually ashamed of their religious affiliations and are indeed frightened to speak about them. Christian holidays and celebrations are abolished or "neutrally" renamed, as if one were ashamed of those Christian holidays. With this method one hides away the deeper moral value of those celebrations.
And these countries try to force this model onto other nations, globally. I am deeply convinced that this is a direct way to the degradation and primitivization of culture. This leads to deeper demographic and moral crisis in the West.
What can be better evidence for the moral crisis of human society in the West than the loss of its reproductive function? And today nearly all "developed" Western countries cannot survive reproductively, not even with the help of migrants.
Without the moral values that are rooted in Christianity and other world religions, without rules and moral values which have formed, and been developed, over millennia, people will inevitably lose their human dignity and become brutes. And we think it is right and natural to defend and preserve these Christian moral values.
One has to respect the right of every minority to self-determination, but at the same time there cannot and must not be any doubt about the rights of the majority.
At the same time as this process plays out at a national level in the West, we observe on an international level the attempts to create a unipolar, unified model of the world, to relativise and remove institutions of international rights and national sovereignty. In such a unipolar, unified world there is no place for sovereign states. Such a world needs merely vassals.
From a historical perspective, such a unipolar world would mean the surrender of one's own identity and of God-created diversity.

F/N: This seems to be from a Sept 19, 2013 meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club in Russia. The fuller excerpts here are well worth the reading.

Putin here alludes to Acts 17: " 26 And He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on the face of the earth, having determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands and territories. 27 This was so that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grasp for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us. 28 For in Him we live and move and exist [that is, in Him we actually have our being], as even some of [f]your own poets have said, ‘For we also are His children.’ . . . " [AMP]

Food for sobering thought as we approach the threshold of another new year, one that portends to be tumultuous, given Brexit, Trump and Syria, not to mention the recent UN Security Council resolution targetting Israel.

Brethren, let us pray, for kings and all in authority, that there may be stabilisation enough that we may live a reasonable life and have a climate in which the good news of the Prince of Peace can be shared without let or hindrance.  END

Trump easily wins at Electoral College despite threats, protests, pleas

. . . and Mrs Clinton had a bigger faithless elector problem.

Reuters headline (yes, Daily Mail had no easily seen, inimitable bullet point lead!):

A clip or two:

Republican Donald Trump prevailed in U.S. Electoral College voting on Monday to officially win election as the next president, easily dashing a long-shot push by a small movement of detractors to try to block him from gaining the White House . . . . [however] more Democrats than Republicans went rogue, underscoring deep divisions within their party. [which were not the focus of a media firestorm, unlike issues with Republicans] At least four Democratic electors voted for someone other than Clinton, while two Republicans turned their backs on Trump.

With nearly all votes counted, Trump had clinched 304 electoral votes to Clinton's 227, according to an Associated Press tally of the voting by 538 electors across the country.

"I will work hard to unite our country and be the President of all Americans," Trump said in a statement responding to the results.

The Electoral College assigns each state electors equal to its number of representatives and senators in Congress. The District of Columbia also has three electoral votes. The votes will be officially counted during a joint session of Congress on Jan. 6.
In short, Mr Donald J Trump is now the 45th President-Elect of the United States of America.

It is worth noting at this point that at least one prominent Christian figure, Lance Wallnau, has felt that God has told him that Mr Trump is a Cyrus-like, Isaiah 45 figure.

(Notice, this was spoken TO Mr Trump, six months ago, by Mr Wallnau.)

Isa 45:This is what the Lord says to His anointed,
to Cyrus [king of Persia],

Whose right hand I have held
To subdue nations before him,
And I will ungird the loins of kings [disarming them];
To open doors before him so that gates will not be shut:

“I will go before you and level the mountains;
I will shatter the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron.

“I will give you the treasures of darkness [the hoarded treasures]
And the hidden riches of secret places,
So that you may know that it is I,
The Lord, the God of Israel, who calls you (Cyrus the Great) by your name.

“For the sake of Jacob My servant,
And of Israel My chosen,
I have also called you by your name;
I have given you an honorable name
Though you have not known Me.

“I am the Lord, and there is no one else;
There is no God except Me.
I will embrace and arm you,
though you have not known Me,

That people may know
from the rising to the setting of the sun [the world over]

That there is no one except Me.
I am the Lord, and there is no other,

The One forming light and creating darkness,
Causing peace and creating disaster;
I am the Lord who does all these things. [AMP]
Let us test all things, holding to the good.

For me, I said openly that I would believe the nomination and election of Mr Trump when I see them.

I have now seen, I believe that he has won the election.

Now, he has an opportunity to make a good difference in the world. Let us pray that he does so, as scripture mandates that we do.

Let us go to 1 Tim 2:
1 Tim 2:1 First of all, then, I urge that petitions (specific requests), prayers, intercessions (prayers for others) and thanksgivings be offered on behalf of all people, for [a]kings and all who are in [positions of] high authority, so that we may live a peaceful and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.

This [kind of praying] is good and acceptable and pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who [b]wishes all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge and recognition of the [divine] truth.

For there is [only] one God, and [only] one Mediator between God and mankind, the Man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom [a substitutionary sacrifice to atone] for all, the testimony given at the right and proper time. [AMP]

This one gets stranger and stranger. END

BREAKING -- Fidel Castro dead, at 90 years of age

I saw a pointer on The Hill, and did a Google search. BBC is good for this sort of thing:
Fidel Castro, declining years (HT: BBC & AFP/Getty)
Fidel Castro, Cuba's former president and leader of the Communist revolution, has died aged 90, his brother has said.

"The commander in chief of the Cuban revolution died at 22:29 hours this evening (03:29 GMT Saturday)," President Raul Castro said.

Fidel Castro ruled Cuba as a one-party state for almost 50 years before Raul took over in 2008.
His supporters said he had given Cuba back to the people. But he was also accused of suppressing opposition.
The obituaries will roll in, but in responding to them let us understand that we are here dealing with a Marxist-Leninist (aka Communist) dictator with much to account for, starting with the blood of many innocents. Of course, I have come to the view that on the whole we are the worst, most blood-guilty generation in history; with the blood of 800+ million victims of abortion in the past 40+ years crying up from the ground against us.

Our judgement is suspect, and neither our praise nor our blame is to be regarded as so absent serious and sober-minded fact checking.

I write this in full expectation that in the Caribbean as a whole, there will predictably be a one-sided celebration of Castro. The people of Cuba and of the Caribbean as a whole will be better served if we have a more sober-minded assessment.

As for BBC, no, he was not merely ACCUSED of suppressing opposition, Castro was beyond any reasonable or responsible doubt a bloody-handed Communist Dictator, though the exact death toll in Cuba and through Cuba elsewhere is hard or impossible for us to determine.  (It does not speak well of the BBC that it cannot say such plainly. [Cf. here and here as a start, also noting the exchange here.])

Let us condole with those who mourn a loss, but let us not lose sight of the duty to truth of coming to a sober understanding of the lessons of history. For, those who refuse to learn from its too often bitter cup, doom themselves to repeat or to echo its worst chapters. END

PS: Discussion is blogged at UD.

Mood Music -- Non nobis Domine, from the post Agincourt scene of King Henry V

Notice the grey devastation and death in the aftermath of the battle, and particularly note the telling point of how the King carries a dead lad -- but a short while before blooming with promise, now to be encased in clay -- over his shoulder:

A lesson on the cost and horror of warfare, physical and spiritual.

War is no sporting game, and victory often comes at a price scarce different from defeat. So much so, that the big issue may be not, who won and who lost, but at what overall price have we -- all of us -- come to this. Thence, how can we come back together and find a way . . . the right way . . . forward, together.

In this case, the blood guilt of 800+ MILLION unborn children slaughtered in a generation hangs around ALL of our necks, like the infamous albatross.

This is the central evil of our time, and the heart of Sauron's wicked system of wolfish injustice dressed up as if it were Justice herself.

It is on this, that our civilisation will be broken and utterly condemned, if we do not turn back from evil and wickedness. And, once we turn back here, we can then turn to the many other things that have gone wrong, with a cleaner, keener conscience and a clearer vision.

So, as we go forward after Brexit and this US Election -- whatever we may think of both --  let us find a way to build through repentance and reformation.

For, not unto us, not unto us, but to God alone, belongs the Glory. END

PS: Lyrics, from Psalm 113:9 --

Non nobis, Domine, non nobis, sed nomini tuo da gloriam

Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but to thy name give the glory.
