What cross-winds can do: "Any landing you can walk away from . . " vs "Never flying again"

At Birmingham airport in the UK, Thursday just past  a landing passenger jet was pushed sideways dangerously . . . twice . . .  before aborting and landing at Gatwick, London:

My question is, if London etc -- or even Holland, France or Germany were within reach, why did this happen? (And it seems another jet was pushed sideways but managed to land safely.)

Anyway, a warning on the limits of safety on aircraft. END
